I made this photo in the Many Glaciers section of the Glaciers National Park.  It was a relatively short hike, five miles round trip, even with a 17 month old on your back it isn’t too bad.  There are many people on the trail so the bear threat is low […]

Swiftcurrent Falls

At the end of the day when the shadows get long  and the tourists slowly return there water craft of choice, the lake takes on a peaceful mirror like quality.  It seems even the most rambunctious children find an inner peace in order to pay respect to body of water […]

full days work

The Lake McDonald Lodge is geographically located only 10 miles within Glacier National Park west entrance but temporally exists almost a hundred years in our past.  This is truly an inspiring lobby, with a fireplace that you literally walk into and levels intricate timber garnished with exquisite taxidermy.  This trophy […]

Lake McDonald Lodge

This is another photo I made in Glacier National Park.  The silhouette of the landscape was just perfect, you could not have designed it any better.   This Photo was taken from a boat, touring lake McDonald.  This year the park was quite amazing,  this was the third time in […]

Glacier National Park

Another rock formation that every geek in the audience will recognize right away,  the star from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Devils Tower.  This is the actual one not a mash potato model.  As with other Cliché Friday photos, there is not much to say, just that this […]

Cliché Friday – Devils Tower

When we were planning this road trip the first thing I envisioned were the amazing photos I would get of the american heartland.  In reality though, I really havent taken many photos since we left South Dakota.  The reason I haven’t is because, this subject matter really needs to be […]

Heart Land

Hey a post that isn’t from inside of Yellowstone!  We saw this guy along our drive through the Big Horn National Forrest.  Which, by the way, is an amazing place.  I have to be honest I didn’t even know this place existed.  It is Incredibly beautiful, great rock formations, lovely […]

Moose

People that know me will most likely have the reaction of  “no duh” after reading this article.  This photo was created up on Mt Washburn in the Yellowstone National Park.  The greatest part of being up there for me was that there was snow.  I love snow and even the […]

Mt Washburn

I thought I would keep the animal theme going.  Maybe it is because we have had three days in Yellowstone National Park.  The park is saturated with wild animals.  Even on days like our first day, which was one thunderstorm after another and bitter cold, we saw our fill of […]

Buffalo

I think this has just become my first themed weekly post!  On Fridays I will post my version of cliché photos.  They may be a photo of a tourist site or even a theme that is commonly used in photography.  As I have said in my previous post on cliché […]

Cliché Friday

My one goal coming to Yellowstone was to see a bear.  Well it happened today.  It was only a black bear, much smaller then the grizzlies I am used to seeing up in British Columbia, but a bear is a bear.  Even though he was a small black bear I […]

Bear

As a photographer entering a National Park is a very daunting task.  Iconic Photographers have made their careers within these boundaries.  When you show your images in the future you can guarantee you will be compared against these superstars.

cotton ball clouds

This was quite a sight.  Today we were driving from East Glacier National Park to West Yellowstone.  We stopped in Bozeman to have a delightful lunch with relatives.  While we were enjoying catching up we did not notice that the weather was starting to get a bit stormy out and […]

Corkscrewing clouds

When driving across country a photographer has one goal in mind, creating a visual story of america.  What it is and what it looks like.  Most of us invasion capturing rural america, probably because we have a ration fear that it is slowly slipping into extinction.  Well on our particular […]

Roll in the Hay

There is not much to say about this photo.  All of the Goonies fans out there know exactly what this location is and they are pretty familiar with the angle too.  Well I thought this was a good photo to discus cliché photography.

Cliché Photography

The Fern Canyon does not feel claustrophobic when you are hiking deep in its belly but conveying that feeling visually is a little tricky.  You never feel trapped but, your line of sight is constantly crippled by the canyons relentless winding through the redwood forest.

Teeth of the Canyon

There are certain things that are unavoidable in Seattle, getting a great cup of coffee, tasting an incredible micro-brew and heading to the farmers market.

The Vendor

This was a great little trip off the main road.  Fern canyon is about a eight mile drive on a dirt road through a redwood forest.  If the theme song to Jurrasic Park isn’t playing in your head during this drive you are inhuman!

When traveling across country you can really get wrapped up in getting from one destination to the next, well my son makes sure we don’t fall into that rut.  After driving quite a few hours he let us know it was time to pull over.

When on the road you need to be flexible, especially when traveling with a 17 month old. As Laura Dern said in Jurassic Park, “You just think you have control, thats the illusion!”
