Snowy Owl

Snowy Owl

For a while there I thought I was going to be the only photographer in New England without a Snowy Owl portrait this year.  Seams like all of the north-east is infested with these guys this year.  I have heard some Cape locals say that they are as common as seagulls this winter.  Some friends of mine had seen this guy a few weeks back but I was having a hard time scheduling a trip out to get some photos, you know, life just got in the way.  Anyway I was able to find him without much trouble but the location was close to a high foot traffic area.  I guess If you see a guy with a pro level DSLR and a long lens pointed at a tree you should go and see what he is shooting at.  After about 5 minutes of shooting I took my eye away from my camera and turned around to see a crowd of about 25 people surrounding me and the owl.  Most of them were about 20 yards from the bird trying to get there own photos with their cell phones which is pretty laughable because I was about 5 yards from the 15 foot tall tree he was perched in with a 400mm lens and I wasn’t close enough.  I bet facebook was inundated with photos of indistinguishable white dots that day.  Not that that is a problem,  I really enjoy it when I see people paying attention to the natural world.   A lot of people got to see a beautiful Cape Cod celebrity that day.
