I made this photo prior to Janus’ visit to the Cape,  in fact those clouds were the first signs of her arrival.  I just happen to catch a glimpse of this craft as I was headed to the beach.  I could not ignore the contrast of her white hull […]

Hiding from the tide

Yes, this is a cliché photo.  I probably have seen a hundred different version of this same photo.  The tree in the snow storm, its dark limbs and trunks contrasted against the white fury of winter.  Color striped down to a monotone arctic environment sometimes enhanced by executing the exposure […]

Janus

One of the nice things about New England beaches during the winter is that they stay undisturbed.  With very little traffic besides a rouge dog walker or sole beach runner the beautiful texture of the tide is left in the sand throughout the day.  The early morning light really helps […]

Beach Texture

I love fog!  Especially when it is thin with lots of detail.  This particular fog is called ground fog, it happens when the ground is at 32 degrees (fahrenheit) and is warming drastically slower then the air. Back light that stuff and I am a happy photographer!   Doesn’t […]

Ground Fog

Patriotic colors from deep within the boarders of northern Vermont.  This was taken on a beautiful autumn day back in October.  It is very hard for me to resist the pop of white clapboard against a deep blue sky, throw in a bright red door and I am going […]

Red, White and Blue

winters beach
First post of the year!   While I was out shooting today I could not resist capturing the texture that an out going tide leaves on our flats in the Cape Cod bay.  This was the last shot of the day that had decent lighting,  a cloud front was moving […]

Winters Beach

This guy was so cute having fun playing in his dirt pen that he almost made me reconsider my stance on bacon… almost.

Oink

Here is an image I made while wondering around the hills above Montpelier.  I love when I come upon buildings like this.  These structures still have a lot of utilitarian life left in them but, you would be hard pressed to find a right angle in there current construction […]

Vt Shed

The big trick in photography is to know when to break the rules.  When the human eye looks at an image it will immediately be drawn to the brightest portion.  Then it will explore the image and finally return to the brightest area.  That is why, typically, the […]

Light and Dark

Funny, I took this photo in peek fall at an apple orchard but the hues of this image just make me think of the Christmas season.  Probably because red and green are synonymous with the Santa holidays.  I always look for subjects that separate themselves from the environment.  Sometimes […]

Color

Just because you don’t have stunning light doesn’t mean you can’t get a dramatic picture. I had a limited amount of time up at the Portland Head Light which meant I could not camp out and wait for the sun to break through.  Instead of making this photo about the […]

Portland Head Light

I had a great time shooting this picture.  It was one of those locations that I just stumbled upon and I stumbled upon it in the early hours of the morning.  It was darker then dark out when I rounded a bend and was completely surprised to see this […]

Light Painting

I stumbled upon this beautiful scene on the backroads of Vermont as I was coming home from an early morning shoot.  I am not sure if I was more impressed with the scene or the property owners preparedness for the upcoming cold weather.  Needless to say, I could not help […]

Yellow Scraper

My favorite way to photograph landscapes is to get in my car and get lost.  That is exactly how I captured this iconic Vermont scene of a barn and snow plow patiently awaiting the change of season.  I was lost in the hills above Montpelier Vermont as the morning autumn […]

Lost

We are experiencing some amazing weather out here on the cape.  Normally all the winter storms hit the New England interior, but the last storm kissed the cape and left the main landers hung out to dry.  Looks like this Friday we will get a repeat too!

Cozy

I made this image a few months ago when I was on a hike with my son August.  I love these patches of pillow soft moss.  They keep their vibrant green color late into the season and really punctuate the brown deciduous forest floor.

Autumn Moss

I came across this bouy in the ice while wondering around the frozen marsh at Paines Creek.  It actually was a beautiful day, just a little chilly, it was about 18 degrees at the time I shot this.  If you are inclined to shoot in conditions like this I […]

Cold Snap

Had a great time dangling thousands of dollars of photography equipment over the icy waters of Paines Creek today.  Just to up the ante, it was 18 degrees out, so I didn’t have a great grip.  luckily, when financial loss is on the table I go into ninja, mind over […]
